About Us

Samuel C. (Chris) Worthen, owner:  “My career in construction started in 1992. As vice president of a commercial construction company, I was involved in every phase of the industry from bidding multi-million dollar projects, buying out jobs, contract preparation, project supervision to final close out. We built apartment buildings, office buildings, schools and retail structures, and during the last 15 years we focused primarily on public use swimming pools. During breaks from commercial construction, I took on home renovation projects, doing business as Shoreline Building Services in Waterford, CT. Since moving to the Farmington Valley in 2013 I have combined public-use pool construction with an increasing and very gratifying focus on residential renovations in the community I call home.”

Fair Trades Home Services, LLC was established in 2013 to bring the discipline of the commercial construction world to residential customers.

Our Operating Principles

  1. Transparency:  We work with detailed contracts and project plans, specifying exactly what is to happen, when, and by  whom. Inevitable uncertainties are handled via a number of different agreement types, minimizing confusion for all.
  2.  Fair labor practices:  Our employees are paid a generous, living wage.
  3. Equity: Fair Trades Home Services is NOT a general contractor. We can provide a better  customer experience at a lower overall cost by allowing our customers to contract directly with the specialty trades. If  project management services are required, our time and effort is compensated at roughly half the rate that is charged by  most residential general contractors; this differential provides for sharing of risk between the customer and Fair Trades,  greater control on the part of the customers, and an overall more equitable business relationship.
